International MBA

Class Location: The Internet.

Description: This course provides information for students considering an international MBA program.

Objective: Find out whether it's worth your while studying at an international school.

In addition to business schools in the United States, there are a number of them overseas. Choosing the best school for you depends on both your background and where you would like to be working in business after earning your MBA.

Americans

Americans should only choose to study business in a different country if you will not work your entire career in the U.S. This is because choosing an international school can limit one's career with its lower name recognition and limited alumni networks. And unless you are a dual citizen of the U.S. and the European Union, you may have trouble finding work with EU employers too.

Asians Who Want to Return to Asia

If you are Asian and want to work there after earning your MBA, you can benefit from an education from an American or European business school where you would gain knowledge of both American and European business practices. However another option is an up-and-coming school that has already attracted attention and we believe will soon be demanding even more attention. That is the Indian School of Business (ISB) located in Hyderabad. You should know that many Asian employers still place an American MBA at a premium, and a little bit less on a European MBA and may want to consider such options as the Singapore campus of the University of Chicago.

Europeans

Europe has several very strong MBA programs and we think they will continue to earn respect and prestige. INSEAD and IMD, two top schools, offer one-year programs that can be ideal for someone who does not need a summer internship to succeed with their plans after business school. But, even with the recent animosities over foreign policies, we do believe EU companies will continue to value MBAs earned at American schools.

Canadians

It is common for Canadians to earn MBAs in America, but many Canadian employers are taking note of the great programs available at Ivey and Rotman. Unfortunately, these schools have not drawn much attention from non-Canadian recruiters, with the exception of Ivey's international focus.

Anyone wishing to work in the US after completing an MBA

The best chance for business success in the U.S. is to earn an MBA from an American business school with high name recognition and a large alumni network.
